With the Tokyo 2020 Olympics only a few months away children and young people from across the Borough eager to kick-start their sporting journeys or improve upon their existing skills, can now sign up for free sports coaching sessions, as part of this year’s Specsavers Surrey Youth Games.

The eight week programme of free coaching, tactics and skills sessions is open to all children and young people who live or go to school in the borough, aged between 6 and 16*. Led by fully qualified local coaches, the sessions will culminate in an Olympic-style competition, where participants will represent Team Woking against teams from across the county hosted at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. The coaching will be held from April to June 2020.

Age categories and eligibility vary from sport to sport with opportunities for both boys and girls of all abilities to participate in the following sports: badminton, boccia, boxing, basketball, go tri gym challenge, football (girls only), hockey, judo, swimming (referral only), bee netball (girls only), netball under 12s (girls only), table tennis, squash, cage cricket and tennis.

Cllr Colin Kemp, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games is an annual sporting extravaganza which gives children and young people a fantastic opportunity to try a new sport or improve upon their existing skills.

“The aim of the coaching is to encourage participation among young people, nurture their interest in sport, and to provide an introduction to sporting disciplines they might not have access to at school. I would encourage those who are interested to sign up, take part and have fun as part of this free programme of coaching.”

The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games will take place at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June 2020.
