Local health and safety investigations

We have investigative and enforcement duties to ensure safe and healthy working conditions are provided for all employees, the self-employed and members of the public visiting offices, shops, warehouses, places used for leisure activities and other non-industrial premises.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) deal with factories and other industrial operations, such as construction and agriculture.

Health and safety complaints

Complaints about working conditions are always investigated sensitively. We do not reveal the details of the person who has complained.

Depending on the nature of the complaint, we may look at the level of health and safety training, the adequacy of structural and environmental conditions and safety of plant and equipment. We need to be satisfied that any hazards have been identified and the associated risks adequately controlled.

When work practices or conditions fall short, we look to resolving the situation by giving advice to the employer. If this is not possible, or if the danger poses a risk of serious personal injury, then officers will resort to formal action.

Health and safety accident investigation

We investigate accidents at work and events viewed as dangerous. When appropriate we will simply give advice to the employer to stop it happening again but if a blatant breach is identified as the main reason for an accident, formal action will be taken.

Our accident report may be used in court if someone who has been injured as a result of a work-related accident pursues a compensation claim.

Information and advice

We want to work with business owners and managers to help them comply with the law and control risks. We are always willing to give advice on legislation or practical problems.

If you run an existing business or are considering setting up a new business and wish to discuss anything in relation to health and safety please contact us.
