Once adopted by Full Council, the new list will replace our current Local List.
We invited residents, interested groups and organisations to comment on our draft List of Locally Listed Heritage Assets, commonly known as the ‘Local List’.
A Local List is a record of assets which includes buildings, structures and spaces. These have been included in the list for their architectural and historical importance.
Locally listed assets are not protected by the National Heritage List for England. See the What are listed buildings page on the Historic England website.

The document includes:
- a listing for each asset
- reasons why each asset has been included
- an appendix which shows the current Local List and assets excluded from the draft Local List

The map shows the location and boundaries of each asset.
Public consultation timings
The consultation ran for 6 weeks. It opened on Monday 21 October and closed at 5pm on Monday 2 December 2024.
What a Local List does
A new Local List for Woking Borough will give the locally listed assets some protection through policy and planning systems.
For example, where a planning application is submitted for a locally listed building, the planning authority will consider the reasons why it features on the list and its special architectural or historical features worthy of protection.
The protection applies for works which require planning permission. It does not apply to works carried out under ‘permitted development’ and does not cover inside changes or improvements.

How the draft Local List assets were chosen
We have been working with Surrey County Council (SCC) to produce the draft Local List.
In October and November 2021, SCC ran a public nominations consultation which provided many suggestions for assets to be included on the new list.
Both existing and new assets were marked against the following criteria:
- A – Rarity
- B – Group value
- C – Artistic and architectural value
- D – Archaeological value
- E – Historic association
- F – Landmark status
- G – Social or cultural value
Assets included in the draft Local List document have met at least two of the above criteria.
