Once you have achieved the Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver, the application process should take no longer than two months to complete.
Step 1
This contains all forms and information you need to start your application.
Please note we strongly advise that you complete the Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver before starting your application.
Step 2
Complete the application form, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check form and DVLA check included in your pack.
Step 3
Check you have all of the following items available, which you will be required to take to an appointment with our licensing team. We cannot process your application without any of these items.
- Completed application forms.
- A completed DVLA mandate form.
- A valid passport.
- A valid driving licence.
- Evidence of your National Insurance number, such as the card or a payslip referencing your number.
- Two identical passport photographs.
- The application fee of £112.50. This can be paid online in advance of the appointment, or you can pay by cheque at the appointment.

Please note we will process the DBS and DVLA forms with the relevant agencies. The DBS check is usually the longest part of the application progress and often takes a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks to be processed by the DBS. Please note it is only valid for three months from date of issue.
Step 4
Obtain a Driving Vehicle Standards practical test certificate, which is valid for 12 months from issue) from the Blue Lamp Trust.

Please note the assessment has been specifically created for taxi or private hire drivers.
Step 5
Get a Group Two Medical Examination Report completed by your doctor (GP). Please make sure questions two to four in section one are fully complete.
Please note this report is valid for six months from the issue date.
Step 6
Take our written local ‘knowledge test’. This tests your knowledge on local geography and landmarks plus asks multiple-choice questions on the laws and standards drivers must follow.
The cost of the test is included in your application fee. If you need to retake this test, you will be charged at £15 per test.
Step 7
If you pass the checks and tests, you will be required to pay for your driver’s licence before it can be issued.
