How to renew your driver’s licence

Step 1: check your documents

Check you have all of the following items available, which you will be required to submit to our licensing team.

We cannot process your application without any of these items.

  • Completed application forms - see step 4.
  • A DVLA check code.
  • A valid UK passport or 'Right To Work' code.
  • Current enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Certificate - see step 2.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Evidence of your National Insurance number, such as the card or a payslip referencing your number.
  • Your tax check code (not your UTR).
  • Two identical passport photographs.

Please note we will process the DBS and DVLA forms with the relevant agencies. The DBS check is usually the longest part of the application progress and often takes a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks to be processed by the DBS. Please note it is only valid for three months from date of issue.

Step 2: check your DBS certificate status

You will need to complete a new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check with every three-year renewal.

If you have an account with the DBS Update Service, you must provide a copy of the enhanced certificate linked to your online DBS account. We will only accept a certificate where the position applied for must state 'Other workforce - taxi driver'.

Step 3: check your medical report status

Medical reports are valid for five years. Drivers over 60 years old must undertake a medical examination every year.

If you need a medical report, please contact your doctor (GP).

Please note a medical report is valid for six months from the issue date.
