On rare occasions we’re required to rename or renumber a street, if:
- there is confusion over a street's name or numbering.
- the majority of residents are unhappy with their street name.
- new properties are built in street and there is a need for other properties to be renumbered to accommodate the new properties.
- the number of named only properties in a street is deemed to be causing confusion for emergency services and postal deliveries.
We will directly consult with affected residents, if we feel there is sufficient evidence to warrant a change of name or numbering.
If residents living within a street wish to change the street name, they must canvass existing residents to gauge the level of support for the proposal and submit justified reasons in writing to us. We will then consult directly with affected residents to independently canvass their views. To make a change, we must obtain support from a majority (51%) of the owners of the properties in question. The Council will also consult the local ward councillor. Further consideration will then be made for the request.
How to apply
Applications for renaming or renumbering a street must be sent via email and include detailed reasons for the requested change.
