Annual canvass update: Canvassers to start visiting non-responding households

Date:

Monday, 17 October, 2022

Canvassers, working on behalf of Woking Borough Council, will start visiting households who have been invited to respond to this year’s annual canvass and have not yet done so.

The ‘annual canvass’ is carried out by the Council each year to help keep the electoral register up to date and encourage residents who have yet to register to do so before it’s too late.

Starting on Saturday 22 October, the canvassers will visit non-responding households on weekends between 10am to 6pm and they will identify themselves by wearing Woking Borough Council photo ID badges.

Only one person from the household will be asked to complete the annual canvass form and the canvasser will also provide assistance to ensure forms are correctly completed. If a canvasser calls at an address and no-one is at home, they will leave a form to complete and instructions on how to return the form to the Council as quickly as possible.

Julie Fisher, Woking Borough’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Those households who have yet to respond to the annual canvass are being urged to take part so they do not lose their right to vote in May next year.

“In particular, people who have moved home recently are encouraged to take part in the canvass and check who is registered to vote at their new address. Research by the Electoral Commission shows that recent home movers are much less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time.”

The Council is required by law to visit properties that have yet to respond. Canvassers, acting on behalf of Woking Borough Council, will be out and about in the borough from 22 October until 20 November 2022. The updated electoral register will be published on Thursday 1 December 2022.
