It’s all systems go for construction work at a former car dealership in Old Woking, as works commenced last week on Hale End Court, a brand new independent living extra care housing facility.

The four-storey residence will provide 48 new one and two-bed flats, for older occupants. It will be equipped with everything that its residents require to enable them to continue living independently.

Each flat will have its own fully equipped kitchen. Alternatively there will be a separate commercial kitchen able to provide meals for those who chose not to cook for themselves as well as communal living and dining rooms, and a landscaped outdoor courtyard, which will provide comfortable spaces for socialising and recreational activities. An on-site salon will also be created to meet creature comforts, and mobility scooter charging ports installed.

All of the homes will be fully accessible and appropriately modified for secure living with devices such as door buzzers, accessible bathrooms and pull chords fitted as standard. The facility will be the tenth supported living facility in Woking Borough Council’s portfolio of affordable independent living dwellings.

Cllr Simon Ashall, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Living Well and Wellbeing Services, said:

“It will come as no surprise to many that with the average age of the population rising steadily, we have a significant need in the borough for more suitable, affordable dwellings that our most vulnerable elderly neighbours can call home.

“We are delighted that funding has been identified to build a new facility for this purpose on disused land in Old Woking, allowing more people to live as independently as possible, for as long as possible, in comfort and with the peace of mind that help is never far away should they require it.”

Ian Edwards, Director, Willmott Dixon London & South region commented: “We are delighted to be working with Woking Borough Council, supporting them in their plans to deliver much needed housing of this type to the area. Hale End Court is a fantastic scheme, which we hope upon completion will give its new residents a great sense of comfort, community, security and a place to call home.

It is anticipated that works will be completed by the end of September 2021.
