Hale End Court, Woking Borough Council’s brand new £16.7 million residential home in Old Woking, has officially opened.

To mark the occasion, a plaque was unveiled during a short ceremony attended by the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Liam Lyons.

The event also saw tenants enjoy afternoon tea with the mayor while invited guests received a tour of the state-of-the-art facility.

Hale End Court features 48 self-contained, modern apartments. The generous living space is designed to help elderly or frail individuals and couples to live independently in a comfortable environment. Other features at Hale End Court include a:

  • beautiful courtyard and roof terrace
  • large dining room where meals can be purchased daily
  • warm and intimate communal lounge
  • an on-site hair salon
  • coffee bar
  • parking for tenants
  • scooter storage and charging station
  • dementia friendly features such as coloured doors and carpets to help stimulate memory
  • wet room bath rooms, and
  • daily activities.

Tenants will also have the option to sign up for various support services, including meals delivered to their door and a range of sensors and alarms to summon additional help.

Cllr Debbie Harlow, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing Services, said: “With the average age of the population rising steadily, the creation of independent living facilities such as Hale End Court is absolutely vital to allow more borough residents to live as independently as possible, for as long as possible.

“These fully equipped, modern, yet affordable, dwellings will provide safe and comfortable homes for some of our most vulnerable residents, with the additional peace of mind that help is never far away should they require it.”

Ian Tomes, Woking Borough Council’s Strategic Asset Manager, added: “I am so proud that we have been able to open the doors to this major development for the community after the project was delivered on time and on budget despite the challenges of Covid-19. Hale End Court is the tenth supported living facility in the Council’s portfolio of affordable independent living and will benefit so many.

“Not only have we delivered comfortable and accessible living spaces, but the building received a Gold award ‘secured by design’, accreditation from Surrey Police. It has also been built with sustainability in mind by using a fully timber frame achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

“Following the opening ceremony, I wish all the tenants the very best in their new homes.”
