Date:
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to have their say on the borough’s local heritage assets during a six-week consultation.
The consultation on the draft List of Locally Listed Heritage Assets or ‘Local List’ began today (Monday 21 October 2024) and seeks views on an updated document containing a variety of heritage assets such as buildings, structures, gardens and landscapes.
The Local List is a register of all buildings and assets identified as having heritage significance, even though they don’t meet the criteria for statutory listing. The document provides a comprehensive assessment of each asset, with a description and outline of their significance.
Both existing and additional heritage assets have been assessed against a set of criteria to determine their suitability for inclusion.
Speaking about the launch of the consultation, Cllr Liam Lyons, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning and Regulation, said: "Our borough is rich in heritage, both in the built and natural environment.
“Through this consultation, residents and stakeholders have a unique opportunity to have their voices heard in preserving and celebrating the local history that shapes our communities.
"The Local List not only highlights the significance of these assets but also ensures that future decisions respect and protect their contribution to our borough’s identity and sense of place.”
Assets listed in the Local List are afforded protection through the planning system as ‘non-designated heritage assets’ and classed as a material consideration when assessing a planning application.
Have your say
Comments on the draft Local List can be submitted using the online consultation form.
A copy of the draft Local List and interactive map outlining the designation of each asset can be viewed online.
Residents and stakeholders have until 5pm, Monday 2 December 2024 to share their views.
Next steps
All feedback received on the draft Local List will be considered and, if appropriate, incorporated into the document once the consultation has closed. The document will then be considered at a future meeting of Council for adoption, whereupon it would replace the existing Local List.
