Junior Citizen makes a welcome return

Hundreds of Year 6 students from across Woking have once again participated in the well-established health and safety course for young people, Junior Citizen.

Junior Citizen offers a series of fun but informative sessions aiming to teach valuable life skills that will keep students safe.

The interactive ‘stranger danger’ demonstration, led by Surrey Police, was a particular favourite with students as they were deliberately but unsuspectingly led away by an actor to highlight the need to have their wits about them.

Sessions led by Network Rail raised awareness of the hazards on station platforms and stressed the importance of staying off the train tracks, while sessions led by Surrey Fire & Rescue and RNLI encouraged students to raise the alarm instead of putting themselves at risk.

Speaking about the scheme, Deputy Mayor of Woking, Cllr Saj Hussain, said: “I’m so proud that the council is able to continue supporting Junior Citizen which has been a triumph once again with almost every school in the borough attending.

“No one wants to find themselves in the real-life dangers that the course material covers, but the content allows children to understand how to prevent an emergency from developing, what precautions to take and ways in which to handle each scenario.

“A massive thank you to the organisations who give up their time to help deliver this course each year. The life lessons children learn during their visit are invaluable and I hope they carry this experience with them in their day-to-day lives.”

Junior Citizen is offered free to all primary and junior schools in the borough. It is organised by the Safer Woking Partnership, in partnership with Surrey Fire & Rescue, Surrey Police, Network Rail, Hope UK, RNLI and Woking Football Club.
