Date:
Doorstep callers are ‘salespeople’ or ‘traders' who show up unannounced and try to pressure you into getting work done on your house, like cleaning your gutters or cutting back trees. They'll often claim they're just in the neighbourhood and can offer you a good deal if you ‘buy now’. Not only could they be trying to sell you a poor product or service at a highly inflated price, they may also be scoping out you and your property.
What to do:
- Don't feel obligated to talk to them at all.
- If you do talk, don't agree to anything on the spot. Please note If you agree for the work to be carried out, companies are legally required to give you a written notice explaining you have the right to a 14-day cooling off period.
- Get quotes from other companies before making a decision.
- Do not pay cash on your doorstep.
Who to contact:
- If you feel threatened or in immediate danger call the police on 999.
- If the trader is still there or expected to return soon, call the police on 101.
- To report the trader, call Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 223 1133 - they will pass the enquiry to the relevant Trading Standards service.
If the trader is claiming to work for Woking Borough Council:
We work with a number of different contractors to carry out our services and duties. If they require access to your property, we will always try to let you know in advance of them calling, and where possible schedule an appointment.
We are not working with Imperial Home Developments
All contractors working on our behalf will carry identification (ID), will arrive in a branded vehicle and be wearing branded uniform. You should always ask to see their ID and perform these visual checks before you let them into your home.
If you are in any doubt, please contact us on 01483 755 855 to check the purpose of their visit. You will never be asked to provide any personal details such as your date of birth or be asked to make a payment.
