Urgent Afghan refugee housing appeal

Friday, 20 August, 2021

Woking Borough Council has pledged to help resettle Afghan families and is urgently seeking three and four bedroom properties available to rent now.

Landlords with vacant or soon-to-be vacant properties are urged to get in touch with the council’s private sector housing team by calling 01483 743 836 or emailing

The council’s Let’s Rent scheme offers landlords a choice of free management services (full, partial or none) and additional benefits including:

  • a cash incentive and financial bond
  • free preparation of tenancy documents
  • free annual gas and electrical inspections
  • regular property inspections
  • support to ensure the tenancy runs smoothly
  • rent guarantee

This call for housing comes after the Government announced it will launch an Afghan citizens’ resettlement scheme to help up to 20,000 vulnerable Afghans who have been forced to flee their homeland.

Cllr Ayesha Azad, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: “Woking residents have a long history of welcoming people from all walks of life, of every nationality, belief and background. We have recently resettled fifty Syrian refugee families under another government scheme and are now set to assist Afghans who have supported the UK military in Afghanistan, while putting themselves and their families at considerable risk.

“Although details of the Afghan citizens’ resettlement scheme are yet to be released, we want to ensure we’re ready to play our part in offering support to those fleeing violence, which is why we are urging landlords to come forward now.”
