We have commenced a programme of drainage and resurfacing works in Woking Park to extend the life of our popular jungle themed play area.
The play area, which sits at the foot of the Pool in the Park building, is impacted by rainwater run-off which has resulted in the gradual erosion of the footpaths and parts of the embankment.
To rectify the problem, we are installing gullies outside the pool entrance to divert rainwater away from the play area, and resurfacing internal footpaths with a durable, permeable material to stop them becoming uneven or loose underfoot.
Paths around the play area which suffer from excessive pooling and become muddy and impassable during the winter months, will also be renewed.
Speaking about the works, Cllr Ellen Nicholson, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Leisure, said: “I’m really pleased the works have started to extend the life and enjoyment of this popular play area which is now 10 years old.
“Surprisingly, play areas are not a statutory council function despite the importance of outdoor play on a child’s early development being widely accepted, so we’re using external funding, obtained from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), to make sure this exciting and challenging play area remains available for current and future generations to benefit from.
“Whilst the play area is closed temporarily, we will also be investigating, and hopefully fixing, the drainage issues preventing some of the play equipment from being used.
“I apologise for any disruption caused by the works, particularly the overlap with the start of the school holidays, however the play area will reopen in time for Easter for everyone to enjoy.”
The play area will close on Monday 17 March and reopen week commencing 7 April 2025.
