Date:
Cllr Beryl Hunwicks, the 46th Mayor of Woking, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Saj Hussain, are to remain in office for another year.
The Council’s Annual Meeting and Mayor Making ceremony, scheduled to take place in May, has been postponed until May 2021 meaning all existing councillor appointments remain in force.
Speaking about the extended term, Cllr Hunwicks, the Mayor of Woking, said: “It’s a great privilege and honour to serve the borough in this capacity; to celebrate its achievements and to be an ambassador for all that is great about Woking and the things of which we are proud.
“Those who have served as Mayor before me will know how demanding the role can be, and I confess I was looking forward to an end of term break! But that was then, and now I am lifted by the bravery of our key workers, and the kindness, generosity and ingenuity that has come to the fore of late. I am truly humbled to be Woking’s Mayor during this time and will do all I can to support the recovery and rehabilitation of our wonderful and vibrant borough over the next 12 months.”
The restrictions put in place to protect people during the coronavirus pandemic has made life tougher for those in abusive households. The Mayor will continue to support and fundraise for local domestic abuse charity, YourSanctuary, during the 2020/21 mayoral year.
Cllr Saj Hussain, who continues to serve as Deputy Mayor, said: “This is such an important cause because of the impact it can have on the whole family. I am proud to support the Mayor in helping to raise vital finds for YourSanctuary, and working alongside her to fulfil the civic and ceremonial responsibilities required of the role is helping to prepare me for my 2022 to 2023 Mayor term, which I am very much looking forward to.”
