Public spaces in Woking town centre have welcomed the presence of a team of COVID-19 marshals, recruited to help increase the safety of everyone visiting and working in the town during the pandemic.
The trained marshals will be on hand to help to ensure that social distancing, face covering and hand-washing guidelines are followed, provide assistance to businesses and offer advice on staying safe.
Cllr Ayesha Azad, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: “Our key priority is to continue to support residents and businesses and keep Woking COVID secure. I am immensely proud of Woking’s response to the pandemic and how hard officers, partners and venues worked to safely reopen Woking for business after lockdown.
“We have invested in equipping our COVID-19 marshals with the skills and knowledge they need to champion safe socialising. They will provide a reassuring presence in the town centre and I encourage you to look out for them and approach them if you need advice or assistance.
“For many, something previously simple, such as going to the shops, has become a daunting prospect and I look to everyone to play their part, be mindful of others and follow the guidelines that are in place to protect us, at all times.
“If you are approached by a COVID-19 marshal, please cooperate with their request and be respectful. And don’t forget the three simple steps you must continue to take: wash your hands, wear a face covering and keep your distance from others. Together, we can minimise the spread of the virus in our town and make sure Woking remains a thriving, vibrant, safe, place to visit.”
COVID-19 marshals will be on duty in Woking town centre at peak times, night and day and will have the authority to take enforcement action where necessary, including serving fixed penalty notices (FPNs) for non-compliance under the Coronavirus regulations.
