Once again, Woking Borough Council is supporting Earth Hour, the global environmental movement that highlights the collective impact of small actions.
From 8.30pm local time on 23 March, the council will join millions across the world to mark WWF's Earth Hour by switching off its lights in the Civic Offices for one hour to show its support in protecting the future of the planet.
Cllr Peter Graves, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for a Greener Woking, said: "As the home of WWF-UK, we are proud to commit to Earth Hour, which globally highlights the importance of tackling the climate crisis facing us all.
“Many of the world's most threatened species like tigers and orangutans live in areas that are being severely affected by climate change. WWF's Earth Hour is making a statement about climate change, and showing small steps can work towards a healthier planet in the future.
“Woking has long been committed to protecting the environment, with our first climate change strategy adopted in 2002. Our strategy, Woking 2050, sets out a vision for guiding our collective efforts towards a sustainable borough by reducing our environmental impact.
“It is important that we all strive to get involved with Earth Hour. Switching the lights off is a simple action that reaffirms the idea we are strongest in numbers. Even small changes make a difference.”
Earth Hour is more than a moment; it's a movement that for the last 18 years has continued to inspire and mobilise people globally, reminding us of our collective responsibility to create a more hopeful and resilient future for our planet.
