With only one week to go, Woking residents are being urged to get ‘vote ready’ ahead of the upcoming general election on Thursday 4 July 2024.
The general election will give registered voters the chance to elect a Member of Parliament for Woking.
Voting in person
Residents voting in person will have already received their poll cards through the post. It contains details of their designated polling station. Please check carefully before heading out to vote in case the polling station has changed. Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm.
You can also check online to find your allocated polling station.
When voting in person, residents will need to bring an accepted form of photo ID in order to receive their ballot paper. A full list of accepted ID can be found on the Electoral Commission’s website.
Registered voters should take their time when completing the ballot paper. Read the ballot paper carefully and complete it in line with the instructions. Don't write anything else on the ballot paper, or the vote may not be counted.
It is important that all residents feel supported and empowered to cast their vote. Elections staff will be on hand to assist with any questions and provide support to voters with disabilities to enable them to vote independently or with assistance.
Postal voters
Voters who have opted to vote by post need to make sure their postal ballot pack (completed and sealed) is returned as instructed. There is no need to provide photo ID when voting by post.
Please remember, residents will only be able to hand in postal votes of up to five other people, as well as their own at a polling station
When handing in postal votes, you will need to complete a form. You will need to include your name and address, how many postal votes you are handing in and why you are handing in those postal votes.
Postal votes returned by hand and not accompanied by a completed postal vote return form will be rejected.
Emergency proxy vote
Residents who become unwell shortly before polling day, or on the day itself, don’t need to lose their vote.
Voters can apply for an emergency proxy, where a trusted person votes on their behalf, up until 5pm on Thursday 4 July 2024. To apply, please call 01483 743 860.
Your vote is yours alone
In any election in the UK, your vote belongs to you. Whether you vote at a polling station, by post, or via a proxy, it’s your decision alone.
It is illegal for anyone to influence you to vote against your will. If someone tries to take your vote, or the vote of anyone you know, you can report it to Crimestoppers anonymously.
