Residents, families, staff, volunteers and local charities were joined by the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Beryl Hunwicks, to celebrate the 30th birthday of Brockhill Extra Care Housing Scheme today (Thursday 11 July 2019).
Special guest, former Mayor of Woking, Mrs Anne Ansell (formerly Cllr Anne Cartwright), made a welcome return to the centre she opened in 1990 and Daphne Harvey, a resident who has been at Brockhill since it opened enjoyed the celebrations as well as cutting the celebration cake with the Mayor.
Organised by Woking Borough Council’s Home Independence Team, the afternoon's celebrations included a buffet, singer Graham Broad, magician Kelly Kadabra, raffle and cake cutting, as well as a guess the weight of the cake competition.
Designed by Council architects and costing £3 million, Brockhill was hailed throughout the country as a model for future sheltered homes. It provides 49 specially designed self-contained flats offering comprehensive, around the clock, sheltered housing support to elderly residents to help them to remain as independent as possible. Brockhill also features a beautifully landscaped garden and courtyard, providing a peaceful and pleasant place to relax and enjoy.
Elderly residents of Woking can also drop-in Monday to Friday to take part in the daily social activities as part of the day centre offer and enjoy a great value home-cooked meal. Brockhill has recently been refurbished and a variety of new activities have been added to the day centre programme.
During the celebration, Mayor of Woking, Cllr Beryl Hunwicks, said: “I’m delighted to celebrate 30 years of Brockhill and the fantastic service it offers, and especially pleased to be joined by both Anne and Daphne who were here when the service first opened in 1990.
“I am extremely proud of the service that Brockhill provides to many older people and would like to thank all of those who have helped Brockhill and its residents over the years, and made it the great friendly community that it is.”
