Cranes, equipment and machinery on highways

You need a licence to place a crane (either vehicle mounted or tower), cherry picker or other equipment and machinery on the public highway for any length of time. Within Woking's town centre boundaries, issuing these licences is our responsibility.

If the project requires either temporary traffic signals, highway permits (for road openings) or a road closure to run concurrently with the crane licence, please make allowances for the time scales involved in processing these other applications.

Licences are normally issued five working days from the receipt of an application. The duration of the licence is open to discussion depending upon the nature of the work being undertaken, classification of road and volume of passing pedestrian and/or vehicle traffic.

How to apply

Before you apply, please read our terms and conditions carefully. Please note that if you wish to extend or renew or change your existing licence you will need to submit a new application form.

Documents required

You will need to submit a suitable plan showing details of the proposed works and reasons for your application. Public liability insurance is required with a minimum cover of £5 million against third-party risks.

Fees and charges

Before we issue the licence, we require a refundable deposit in addition to the licence fee. This deposit is to protect against potential damage to the public highway caused by the crane or equipment. If our contractors are called out to light up the site, or to make it safe, a charge will also be incurred.
